It’s the Nu Killa Kru’s 10th birthday bash down in Limerick on Saturday, March 6th. It’s also the last Nu Killa Kru gig !

Yes, Code has decided to hang up his gig promoter hat to focus on his bad ass record label: Subtle Audio Recordings.

So who’s playing ? glad you asked:

Code,
Bee,
Roller T,
Mecca,
Deep Cut,
Lymer,
Leon,
Iree MC !

And here’s the 411 from the man himself, Code:

I’m not sure which category our night comes under but either way, we’re celebrating 10 years of ‘Nu Killa Beats’ on Saturday March 6th and it just happens to be the last one aswell.

I’m want to concentrate more on running the Subtle Audio label and making music and it’s kinda hard to do that and still promote a night properly. I’ll still be doing some one-off events related to the Subtle Audio side of things but as for the monthly sessions in Limerick – we’re saying goodbye !

I guess the other reason I don’t feel obliged to run the night anyone is that luckily a certain Mr. Flynn has come along and been putting on quality events in the last few months – I’ve been waiting 10 years for someone stupid enough to run a D&B night in Limerick to appear

There are alot of good memories from the time we’ve been doing the gigs down here, we’ve put on nights in pretty much every venue in Limerick at one stage or another :

kicked off with a one-off in the Globe in Dec ‘99 (hooked up with Bassbin and had Fierce / Don R and Roller T on the bill)

Then we started a regular weekly in the basement of the Dog House on Thomas St in February of 2000 – that was when we first slapped that glorious achievement of mis-spelling on ourselves and became known as the ‘Nu Killa Kru’

The night was (equally badly spelt) “Nu Killa Beats” and after running weekly (in what was just a pub venue) for nearly 2 years we switched to monthly nightclub sessions from then on. First of all in the Globe, then in the Savoy (a brief stay) and from there to Costello’s (an equally brief stay!). I think we were out of action for a little while then but resumed in the Redroom (part of the Trinity Rooms). The next venue was The High Stool and then we had a somewhat longer association with Dolans. The most recent home has been The Underground in Baker Place, been there since March ‘07. So we’re also celebrating 3 years there aswell !

Over the years we’ve had a shed-load of guests at the night…

Paradox,
ASC,
Equinox,
Senses,
Chris Inperspective,
Breakage,
Macc,
Perfect Combination,
0=0,
Alpha Omega,
Fierce,
Dj Trax,
Martsman,
Ink,
John Doe,
Egres,
Wilsh,
Raychem & Gunni (Iceland)
also we had booked Ellis Dee for an oldskool set, but he never showed (long story!)

the Bassbin crew,
Rohan,
Naphta,
Beta 2,
Zero Tolerance,
Don Rosco,
Kenny & Keevo,
Genie & Ali,
Elmo & Stacks
Criminal K (MC)
Wuzza (MC)
Ricky Force (Reach)

also,

Tamen,
Ernie,
Tony Skerritt,
Source & Jet Li,
Roy Da Bwoy & Malcom,
Untz Crew – Dave & Shane,
Covert,
Skinny,
Beckett
Skeletor
Kormac & Rosko,
Johnny Mac,
Judge Dredd,
Kato,
Danny D,
Feral & Torque,
Executive Steve (MCing – aka Tyranny at the time)
Flynn

phew… dunno – am I forgetting anyone ?

Hope anyone who played or attended a gig down here still has a good memory of it !

Of course, it’s the locals who have been the mainstay of the night

When we started it was just myself, Roller T and Bee

soon after, Deep Cut, Hi-Teck, Cain & The Evil Grin got on board, also we used to have Leon / Eggz and John Hannon playing hip-hop sets to start off the nights

More recently Lymer & Mecca have been regulars on the decks.

Just want to say a big, big thank you to everyone who came to our nights over the years. The die-hards in Limerick who’d dance whether there were 2, 20 or 200 people in the place ! Also, we’ve always come across people who travelled from other towns just to hear some beats and that always made us feel humbled.

So, one last knees-up then ??!

Who’s up for it ??!!

We even have the Iree MC coming back after a 4 year absence !

SATURDAY – MARCH 6th @ the Underground, Baker Place, Limerick
Doors 10pm till 2:30am

Line up :

Code,
Bee,
Roller T,
Mecca,
Deep Cut,
Lymer,
Leon,
Iree MC !

and we’re hoping Cain can make it back from Spain too… TBC

DAYCENT soundsystem, so don’t worry about that

Click on the link below to get to the download links and more info on the release.

01. Gon – 6
02. Gookey – Magnetosphere
03. Mecca – The power of One
04. Ricky Force – Dreams

DOWNLOAD Mirror

Since Absys records is based in Dublin city we decided that for this release we wanted to do something special and shine a spotlight on some of the new wave of Irish production talent. Since three of the producers on this release are Irish (and the fourth is based in Ireland), and since we have every intention of doing more of these releases in the future, we decided the christen the project as the Amháin series, after the Irish word for “One”, in the sense of unity of purpose and of in the sense of something being unique. We always like to think that there’s no point in giving away music for free unless it’s good enough to pay for, and we certainly hope you agree with us when you say that these four tunes combine to make a very special release indeed.

Ricky Force kicks off proceedings anyway with a glimpse of a more laid-back side to the frenetic New School Junglism and J-Tek that he has mostly become known for; “Dreams” is a tasty arrangement of rolling drums, warm subs and lush pads with shards and splinters of spoken film dialogue that adds to it’s otherworldly charm.

Mecca is a Limerick-based producer who has previously released on Subtle Audio Digital; his track “The Power Of One” is a phenomenally assured composition, kicking off with a halftime intro and some Detroit-esque stabs before plunging into an absolutely bruising percussive workout, before some shimmering atmospherics lower the temperature and cool things down a notch or two. You may not have heard of Mecca before but on the basis of this tune alone I can absolutely guarantee you that you will be hearing a lot more of him soon. Anyone who digs stripped down Techno sounds but appreciates broken beats and chesty basslines will be scratching their heads as to how on earth they managed to score this tune off a free digital release. Dangerous!

Gon is an Dublin-based Italian producer who will be most familiar to Irish heads as the chap behind the counter at the late and much lamented record shop Freebird in Temple Bar, as well as his incendiary Dubstep, UK Funky and Garage sets in venues around the capital. A versatile producer across several genres, his contribution to this release comes in the form of a deep sci-fi tinged Dubstep workout with a strong sense of melodic progression.

Gookey is another one of the most promising of the new wave of Irish production heads; usually known for his modern twist of the original atmospheric sound palette this release (his first ever) finds him rolling out a more urgent, brooding stripped down affair, with razor sharp edits flowing effortlessly over an ominous bassline, one for the DJ’s who like to keep it deep and rhythmical.

So there we have it: four tracks, three Irish and one Irish-based producers, one FREE digital EP mastered to perfection by Macc of Subvert Central Mastering, hours of listening pleasure. Feel free to download, blog, share the links around and play these out as loud as you possibly can; all we ask is that if you share the link you link the release page and not straight to the actual files. Thanks for reading, we hope you enjoy this music as much as we have enjoyed getting it out to you.

Ceol Amháin! Many styles, one music!

BREAKAGE

Stacks vs. Breaker

Steo & BOC Infomatics

12th February 2010

You know, one of these days we’re really going to have to get out of the habit of putting on the gig of the bloody year in fecking January; we may have packed out two floors of the Twisted Pepper a mere two weeks after New Years with a lineup that made grown men weep but we did incalculable damage to our livers and to the hopelessly optimistic New Years resolutions and detox programmes of hundreds of the nicest people in Dublin, in much the same way as we did last year with the Peverelist & 2562 gig, so sorry about that, but sure you all looked as though you were having at least as much fun as we were. Still waiting on the go-ahead to get audio of selected sets from the Birthday night up online, you’ll be the first to know as soon as we do.

By way of apology then, for making you all look like weak-willed degenerates ready to throw away your personal commitments to sobriety and chastity we are extraordinarily proud to present an exclusive appearance by a producer who is not only the absolute surefire hot shit this year but who has a long and involved history with Dublin’s bass music scene. BREAKAGE originally made his name with a succession of career-defining records on the late and very much lamented BASSBIN label, prophetically culminating in This Too Shall Pass, widely regarded as one of the finest solo D&B albums of the century so far. Once the undisputed master of heavily chopped up new school Jungle breakbeat manipulation, Breakage has been on a journey of discovery into slower tempos and has been releasing a slew of extraordinarily accomplished Dubstep anthems on labels like Digital Soundboy. His masterful cross-genr

e collaborations with Roots Manuva, Burial, David Rodigan and The Newham Generals as well as his remixes of luminaries like Massive Attack have happily put the received wisdom that all DnB producers who turn their hands to Dubstep are just bandwagon hopping careerists who uniformly lack the capacity to get it right, as well as managing to be accessible and radio friendly without compromising the original sonic vision by one iota. Simply put, if you don’t make it down to this you’ll never forgive yourself. The man hasn’t played a set in Dublin since New Year’s in the Metropolitan in 2005 and people of a certain age are still getting misty-eyed about that one, and this time he’s going to be armed with a bag of ammunition so lethal you’d worry about getting it through a non-Slova

kian airport. We haven’t asked him to stick to any particular style on this one so expect to be taken on a proper journey right acros

s the spectrum of anything fresh, upfront and deadly.

Stacks & Breaker will be getting you all geared up for the main event, armed with a rake of the finest platters of cutting edge Dubstep and plenty of unreleased and unheard stuff. Stacks is well known around Dublin as a former Bassbin resident as well as co-hosting the less-imaginatively-titled-than-promoted Don Rosco & Stacks Show on www.powerfm.org every Wednesday at 21.00, originally a platform for cutting edge leftfield D&B and nowadays a haven for up-to-the-minute news about snack food and the rapidly mutating frontiers of the stuff that the heads who used to say they make Dubstep are making instead. Breaker is a Wicklow-based producer and DJ and former

promoter of the legendary Surge nights; known for his legendarily tight mixing and his willingness to raid his crates of old jungle tunes for samples to use in his Dubstep production he’s yet another symptom of the blurring lines and the continuity between the heads representing the sounds and styles.

Support on the night comes from none other than The Infomatics, hotly tipped as The Raw Sessions Sony Ericsson Artist of the Year 2009 (and who are we to argue about music with a mobile phone manufacturer), they’ve played with the likes of NAS, Soul II Soul, ICE-T, The Co

ol Ki

ds and De La Soul before and are thus absolutely thrilled stiff to be able to get a slot warming up for Stacks & Breaker on the legendary Twisted Pepper Soundsystem. Steo Infomatics will be no stranger to anyone who has bought a DnB record in the past few years of course, after his critically acclaimed run of smash hit 12″s on the likes of V Recordings, and recently featured in an RTE Radio documentary where he went to Kenya to make a record with an African MC. Tonight will see them turning their hands to something a little different, so make bloody sure you get down as early as you can.

Calibre

Calibre, birth name Dominick Martin, is a Drum and Bass, and Liquid Funk, music producer and DJ hailing from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He originally started producing at a young age and has spent many years refining his sound. He is a classically trained musician playing a variety of musical instruments eventually becoming a self-taught music producer. Martin started producing Drum and Bass in 1995 and his first signed release was credited under the now defunct Quadrophonic label owned by U2.

In addition to impressing some of the biggest names in the business, he soon came to the attention of drum and bass DJ Fabio, who signed Calibre to his influential Creative Source label. While studying Fine Arts at the University of Ulster in Belfast, he became interested in the music of John Cage whose work was influential in entitling Martin’s first album release Musique Concrète in 2001.

Since his initial releases in 2001, Martin has been known for his consistent signature style and sound, which is highly sought after for remixes, by both major labels and independent recording artists.

In 2003, Martin decided to launch his own record label, Signature Records, which became his primary vehicle for launching singles and full-length releases in both vinyl and digital media format. Martin states, “Signature has been set up as an outlet primarily for my own work and collaborations. There won’t be any other artists on the label for the foreseeable future”. For a few years the label’s website ran of the back of Soul:R, the record label he ran alongside Marcus Intalex. With the Soul:R website receiving very few updates since 2006, Calibre has published most of his work and news through his own MySpace Page.

Jet Li

Jet li hails from a small island off the south coast of Ireland called Valentia and first started getting into music at an early age when he heard a tune called Pass the Dutchie by Musical Youth. After that he moved to Manchester in 1991 and found his love for jungle where he stayed for almost 2 years.

On return to his native Island he started running events and djing in local pubs and clubs trying to spread the sound using hip-hop and reggae as a crutch to get jungle heard. He started the first Drum and Bass event to be held in County Kerry called Manga Nights, which ran for a year or so before he moved to the USA in 1995 where he continued the night called Manga Nights, with a crew called Urban Assault, well known around the San José area and also DJing in many clubs State-side and returning in 1998.

Since then Valentia has become a very well respected home to Drum and Bass and where the infamous Jungle Republic, (brainchild of Jet Li and ran by Phase2 and Bassbin) was run for three years. This is known as the best event ever to hit the Irish shores for the movement of Drum and Bass in Ireland. It is just one of the many events that Jet Li has been involved in throughout the years both in Ireland and America.

To date Jet Li is found in Cork still pushing the Drum and Bass sound through his studio and promoting through Phase2 (which was set up by Jet Li and DJ Source in 2000) which has brought the likes of Simon Bassline Smith, Total Science, Marcus Intalex, A-Sides, Caliber along with many others to the unexpecting public.

Jet li and Phase2 has had a massive impact on Drum and Bass in Ireland and now with the setting up of phase2recordings, distributed by Nu Urban Music, surely more is to follow
